Star anise, otherwise known as star anise, comes from Southeast Asia. It contains essential oils that give dishes a characteristic, slightly sweet aftertaste. It can be used for cakes, compotes, puddings, meat dishes, alcohols (e.g. liqueurs), as well as in everyday cooking or as an ornament.
